{"id":59417,"date":"2020-09-16T15:29:54","date_gmt":"2020-09-16T14:29:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aurigaspa.com\/?p=59417"},"modified":"2020-09-16T15:29:54","modified_gmt":"2020-09-16T14:29:54","slug":"2020-banking-predictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aurigaspa.com\/en\/news-and-media\/blog-eng\/2020-banking-predictions\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Reflections on Our 2020 Banking Predictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Where were we?<\/p>\n<p>Looking back on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurigaspa.com\/en\/blog-eng\/future-of-banking-technology-for-2020\/\">our predictions for banks<\/a> from the start of the year, it\u2019s fair to say no one could have known how the year would turn out and how big the impact of the coronavirus pandemic would have on the banking industry.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, our expectations about the key trends of the year have largely rung true.<\/p>\n<h2>Bank Branches Remain a Necessity with a Focus on Video Conferencing<\/h2>\n<p>We predicted that bank branches would continue to have a key role in society in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, in the UK, bank branches were put on the exemption list during lockdown allowing them to legally stay open, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisismoney.co.uk\/money\/saving\/article-8147049\/Will-bank-branch-open-coronavirus-lockdown.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">banks remained open<\/a> as much as possible. However, as lockdown restrictions began lifting, financial institutions that had put a pause on previously planned closures started shutting branches again, such as Co-op Bank as <a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/money\/banks-adjustment-post-coronavirus-world-face-to-face-customer-service-626617\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iNews reported in September<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The same news story noted how YouGov research by Metro Bank found many people are disappointed by physical touchpoints disappearing \u2013 more than 25% said they are struggling to do their banking due to branch closures and over 50% said they like to speak to bank staff in person.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this trend is likely to continue \u2013 RBR\u2019s Teller Automation and Branch Transformation 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbrlondon.com\/research\/tabt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> predicts 1,160 branches will close by 2023 in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>We also expected video conferencing and remote assistance to grow in use and be a remedy to this trend, satisfying digital natives\u2019 demand for digital forms of communication with their financial providers and helping older generations and those in remote areas to be able to access services more easily.<\/p>\n<p>As discussed in our January blog post, there is a way to keep offering digital channels while also keeping branches open, allowing banks to provide maximum choice to their customers over however they want to engage.<\/p>\n<p>Banks can transform their existing sites into #NextGenBranches \u2013 the next generation bank branches that follow a \u2018lean bank branch\u2019 model that maximises efficiency and profitability, enabling them to remain open.<\/p>\n<p>These branches are fully digital, multifunctional and customer-oriented, leveraging technologies such as video banking, AI and automation to deliver 24\/7 access to banking services.<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more about how banks can realise the #NextGenBranch <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurigaspa.com\/en\/blog-eng\/nextgenbranch\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Leveraging AI to Gain Customer Insights<\/h2>\n<p>Another 2020 banking prediction we made was that traditional banks would need to be able to understand, manage, and integrate AI throughout its infrastructure to remain competitive.<\/p>\n<p>While COVID-19 threw a spanner in the works of every organisations\u2019 digital transformation plans for 2020, one thing that has been clear throughout the pandemic is the importance of listening to and supporting customers during crises periods.<\/p>\n<p>Auriga\u2019s Bank4Me solution allows banks to better understand customer needs by digitally connecting them via audio and video banking channels at branches real time.
